What Creates Marble Veining?

Marble's distinctive veining is one of nature's most beautiful accidents. Formed over millions of years under immense heat and pressure, limestone recrystallises into marble — and the veins you see are mineral impurities (iron oxides, clay, silt) that become trapped during this metamorphic process.

Reading the Stone

Carrara marble, quarried in Tuscany, is famous for its soft grey veining on a bright white background. Nero Marquina, from the Basque region of Spain, features dramatic gold and white veins on a near-black background. Travertine, technically a sedimentary stone, has distinctive banding formed by mineral-rich spring water.

Choosing the Right Marble for Your Home

Consider the mood you want to create. Light marbles like Carrara and Bianco expand a space visually and pair well with neutral palettes. Dark stones like Nero Marquina make a bold statement and work beautifully as focal pieces. Earthy travertines bring warmth and texture.
